DEMOCRATIC PLATFORM

LOWER THE COST OF GOVERNMENT

Spending under the Republican administrations and the resulting increases in cost and fees has made it difficult for all, and impossible for some, to live in Long Beach. A Democratic administration would restore fiscal integrity to the City of Long Beach and lower the cost of government by doing the following:

END THE REPUBLICANS POLICY OF GIVING JOBS TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS

The Democratic councilmen and the Democratic candidates, do not have any family members who work for the City, and they have taken a vow not to hire their family members to work for the City.

PROVIDE OPEN GOVERNMENT

Democrats will post significant items on the City's Website for all to see. Specific examples are the Quick Silver Agreement; names of members of all boards and commissions; and Requests for Proposals such as for bicycle rental commissions. An open government is a more representative and efficient government.

CUT WASTEFUL SPENDING

Discontinue the practice of searching for gimmicks (bicycle rentals estimated to provide $300,000 in revenue) and one time revenues that end up costing the City. Democrats will review the spending of every department in the City.

PROVIDE A BALANCED BUDGET

Democrats will invest in our City to reduce costs. For example, by regularly maintaining the Boardwalk our residents will benefit by having a new boardwalk and at the same time taxpayers will save the cost of emergency repairs and law suits.

DEMOCRATS WILL:

PROVIDE OPEN GOVERNMENT

END REPUBLICANS FAMILY AND FRIENDS PROGRAM

REQUIRE THE CITY MANAGER TO LIVE IN LONG BEACH

RESTORE FISCAL STABILITY

DEMOCRATS PLEDGE

  • To only hire qualified employees and pay them fairly. Democrats will not hire our family members to work for the City.

  • To save the Boardwalk by instituting a schedule of regular replacement of sections of the Boardwalk, prohibiting heavy vehicles from and enforcing the rules as they pertain to events, noise and garbage.

  • When considering large events, all meetings will be open to residents for their input.

  • To make our roadways safer for pedestrians by enforcing the law, reducing the speed limit where possible, upgrading pavement markings for crossings and parking and posting speed limit signs.

  • To improve our quality of life and making Long Beach a better place to live.
